BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP
OTAGO AMATEUR FINAL The final of the Otago amateur billiards _ championship was begun last the 11. S. A. between A. Bowie and E. N. Stewart, the holder, a large gallery being treated to a fine exposition of the game, the different styles of the players providing interesting biljiards. At the conclusion of the evening Stewart had not completed his break. The contest will be concluded to-night. A break of 52 was established by Stewart on his third visit to the table, Bowie replying with 20. After a couple of 20 breaks Stewart established a good lead, principally by means of a 77 break at his tenth visit, the highest break of the tournament so far, putting him 137 ahead. Bowie was not favoured with the run of the balls at this stage, but came to light with a neat 69 compiled by all-round billiards. This reduced his opponent’s lead to 53. After a bright opening the play slowed up, neither player giving any ihanees. The scores were called 405403 in Stewart’s favour. Bowie then went to the lead by 34 points, but Stewart finished strongly find reached points with an unfinished break of 11. The scores at the end of the first session were Stewart 501, Bowie 452. Breaks: Stewart—77, 52, 37, 23, 22. Bowie—69, 30. 29, 29, 27, 26.
