VERSES

OCCUPATION Age has not passed me by without his toll. Of strength from eye and ear, But, with a gracious gesture, Leaves in every ravaged spot A thousand miracles of glad surprise— An answered prayer, a'friendship new, The touch of loving hands, a child’s gay voice, A sacmment of pouring oil and wine In this sad world—clouding the stars with hate. Oh, may the Heavenly One who rules both age and time Give ,me the grace to lively live, That I shall hot the end anticipate, Throwing His gifts of occupation to the winds; So Gabriel, when he comes, must loudly ■ call me from, my work, Not find me whining at the Outer Gate.

—Sarah Avery Faunce, in the * Christian Century.
