BEAVER SANCTUARY

GREATEST IN THE WORLD At the mouth of Rupert River, at the foot of the Hudson Bay, in Northern Canada, there stands to-day the greatest commercial beaver sanctuary in the world, extending over 7,000 square miles. This territory is being nursed back into scientific beaver production by the Hudson Bay Company in an attempt to build up again the beaver population in Canada. This particular section of Canada’s northland is a most historic one. It was there that in 1668 the first post of the newlyformed Hudson Bay Company was established and was the first British establishment in what is to-day Canada, the senior British dominion. From this and other posts, the Honourable Company of Gentlemen Adventurers, as the Hudson Bay Company was called, traded with the Indian population for furs. The beaver was so plentiful that its pelt was at one time adopted as legal tender in the trading posts. Owing to the popularity of its fur, the beaver population was practically exterminated and governmental action -was necessary to prevent it becoming completely extinct.
