HAWKE’S BAY CHALLENGE
APPOINTMENT OF OUTSIDE REFEREE ADHERENCE TO SHIELD RULES Otago Rugby Union officials give an emphatic denial to the statement from Hawke’s Bay that the local management committee had refused Hawke’s Bay’s request to submit a list of outside referees for the Ranfurly Shield match at Dunedin on August 31. It was pointed out that the Otago Union was agreeable to the appointment of an outside referee if he were appointed in the usual manner—through the New Zealand Rugby Union. tn support of this, rule 7 of the regulations governing the Ranfurly Shield was quoted. It states:—“ln all challenge matches for the shield (as distinguished from an ordinary match declared to be a challenge match), the New Zealand Rugby Union shall, if requested by either the challenging or challenged union, appoint the referee.” As the party interested in the appointment of an outside referee, it was stated, Hawke’s Bay was the union that should approach the New Zealand Union to appoint a referee through its Referees’ Appointment Board. Otago was merely adhering to the shield rules, and had not refused to have an outside referee.
