THIRTY-SEVENTH FESTIVAL OFFICIAL OPENING TO-NIGHT The thirty-seventh annual festival of the Dunedin Competitions Society was ushered in this morning, when elocution, and vocal items and piano solos were heard in His Majesty’s Theatre and the Concert Chamber. No classes were decided, and the recalls will be heard in His Majesty’s Theatre tonight. At 7.30 the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) will officially open the festival at the theatre, following which the secondary schoolgirls’ choirs will be heard. Two choirs, both from St. Philomena’s College, have entered for this contest. The first of the children’s action choruses will also he presented this evening, in conjunction with piano solos and duets, ballet and acrobatic dances, vocal solos, and recitations. This morning’s results:— ELOCUTION. Judge: Mr J. W. Bailey. Recitation, Ladies 16 and under 21, ‘Brumaha ’ (Fletcher). —There were 18 competitors in this class, the following recalls being made: —Misses Daphne P. Morrison, and Joan Masters (Christchurch). Recitation, Amateurs, Own belection, New Zealand Author.—From a field of 12 two recalls were made, Misses Alice Clarke and Joan Masters. INSTRUMENTAL. Judge: Dr James Lyon. Piano Solo, 16 and under 18, ‘ Gavotte and Musette in D Minor and D Major ’ (Bach); ‘ Arabesque ’ (Schumann). —Mr Rai M'Nichol and Miss Kathleen Allen were recalled in this class, in which there were six competitors. VOCAL. Judge: Dr James Lyon. Solo, Ladies, Own Selection.—There were 21 competitors, Mrs V. E. Glass (Oamaru), Misses Doris E. Wilson, and Leone Watson (Invercargill) being recalled. ______
