BRITISH TUG VICTORIA JAPANESE DESTROYER INVESTIGATING GUNBOAT SCARAB CALLED AWAY ON RESCUE WORK Press Association —By Telegraph—Oopyngbi SHANGHAI, August 16. The Victoria has not yet been released. The Japanese are sending a destroyer to investigate the position. The Scarab’s guard has been temporarily relinquished in order to assist •in the rescue of the sinking German Coaster Hansa on the Whangpoo River after a collision in a hurricane with the anchored British vessel Tungwo. It is believed that 150 Chinese passengers were drowned. [ln response to an urgent summons, the gunboat Scarab rushed to Tungchow Mail'd,.where she found an armed Japanese guard in possession of the British tug Victoria, which was under charter to the Japanese, and discovered that, the ■ Union Jack was torn down and the Japanese flag flying. The skipper declared that he was pinioned, after which the tug was grounded. British naval' officers demanded that the 'Union Jack be flown again immediately and the tug set free. They protested to the Japanese naval authorities .1 .
