ARE ESKIMOS INDIANS
The Canadian Supreme Court was called on recently to decide whether Eskimos are Indians, The case involves the responsibility of the Quebec Provincial Government for the welare of Eskimos within its borders. Quebec officials contended that Eskimos are Indians, and) Indians arc wards of the dominion, not provincial governments. Lawyers for the National Administration argued that Eskimos are just that, and not Indians. Wardship over Indians,.extends to Eskimos only in territories directly administered by the dominion. The court was handed a 626-page book, complete with maps and nearly everything that everybody ever has said on the subject. Tho record goes hack to,the earliest settlement on this Continent. The Quebec AttorneyGeneral’s department argued, on tho basis of it, that Indians and Eskimos have a common origin.
