BOY SCOUTS

HOBBIES AND HANDICRAFT EXHIBITION OPENED RECORD ENTRIES The popularity of the Boy Scout movement was evidenced lust night by the large crowd of parents and friends of the boys who attended the opening of the annual Scouts’ hobbies and handicraft exhibition in the Pioneer Hall. The hall was packed, and a keen interest was displayed in the various exhibits. Variety was the keynote, and surprise was expressed by many that some of the articles had been made by boys. ' Sir Percy Sargood, president of the Metropolitan Executive and a member of the Dominion Executive, presided and introduced the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen). Ho also extended a warm welcome to all Scouts and friends and to Captain K. V. Kn.rls.son, master ol the barque Penang, who had shown his interest in the Scout movement. Sir Percy then urged all those connected with Scouting to keep in touch with the movement whenever possible. The Mayor commended the work which was being carried out by the Scout movement, and congratulated the officers on the very fine work they were performing. The movement was more than Empire-wide, he i said, it was world-wide, and its work was so well known that it required no description. There were 1,200 members in Dunedin in the many troops throughout the city, and many more in the country districts. The ’ work of Scouting bred many desirable attributes, the chief of which were self-reliance, discipline, and honour. It also made for a healthy mind in a healthy body. The Scout movement was also an outstanding force in the development of the Empire and its maintenance, as it gave the boys who took an interest in it very high ideals wind' they could also carry into their life work. The exhibition showed what could be done by competition and the desire for success. It was inspiring to know that in Finland, for instance, Captain Karlsson s country, the Scout movement was the same as it was here, and that Scouts had comrades all over the world. The exhibition was then declared open. The varied nature of the exhibits shows the diverse interests which are fostered in the different troops, ranging from drawings by the Wolf Cubs to such things as cooking, knitting, raffia work, model-making, leather work, metal work, photography, and wireless by the older members. A most interesting display by the members of the Knox Troop consisted of all the requirements of camp life fashioned, from manuka poles. These include a table, washbench, incinerator, and seat, amongst other useful and seemingly sturdy articles. Another aspect of Scouting activities is shown by the Manuka Creek Troop, which consists mainly of homecraft exhibits, including taxidermy. A board on which is shown practically every knot known to sailors and Scouts, together with the uses to -which it is put, forms the main portion of the display of the Mornington Rover crew, while an enormous club made from a manuka root and inlaid with “ cat’s eyes ” collected on the seashore, is another exhibit which attracts attention. The worjs of the Port Chajmcrs Sea Scouts is oh another stand, and lends a distinctively nautical touch. During the evening a number of camp fire items were presented by members of the Scout, Sea Scout, and Rover troops and crews. The exhibition was continued this afternoon, when further items were given by the Wolf Cubs, and will conclude to-night. RESULTS.
