Ltd., New-castle-on-Tyne; according to cable advice received oy the company. The launching was performed by Mrs F B. O’Meara, wife of a mgmber of the company’s local board of directors in London. The Waipori is a single-screw oilburning steamer, and is intended to bo employed in the intercolonial, cargo trade. The vessel’s hull incorporates the Arcform design and her principal dimensions aro: Length, b.p., 348 ft; breath.

55ft; moulded depth, 28ft 6in; ; gross tonnage, 4,400; speed, 13 knots. She is expected to leave the United Kingdom about the middle of October, but the route of her outward voyage has not yet been decided. OIL POLLUTION. The Marine Department continues to receive complaints with reference to pollution of the coast by oil which has been discharged by vessels. These deposits have a serious and deadly effect on bird life and on many occasions а, considerable number o£ dead and dying penguins have been observed on the coast, particularly during May, when the larger penguins are making their way southward to their rookeries (states the ‘ Gazette ’of July 28). The deposits, in addition to being responsible for the death of other sea birds, have rendered many popular beaches unusable for some time. While the discharge of oil outside territorial waters is beyond the limits of New Zealand legislation, masters will, it is felt, readily realise the effect of such discharge and take steps to ensure that no oil, or oil and water, is pumped out until the vessel is well clear of the land or is in such a position that there is very little chance of such matter reaching the shore or territorial waters.
