UNABLE TO PRODUCE
MANUFACTURERS ANSWER PREMIER “ COUNTRY OF PUBLIC WORKS AND IMPORTS " [Per United Press Association.] ■WELLINGTON, July 28. The New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation has issued the following statement:— “ Mr Savage stated in an interview’ that our production gives no evidence of breaking down, therefore a slump can only happen when people are unable to buy what they are able to produce. ' “ We must point out, firstly, that production is breaking down under the twin burdens of higlj costs and imports; secondly, that in consequence people are not only unable to buy what they produce—they are unable to produce. Unless the Government takes remedial action New Zealand will become a country of public works and imports, and the workers in industry will find that there is no place for them in the national economy. It will indeed be a hopeless position for the worker with a family when relief work replaces the pay envelope of a steady, permanent job in industry. No worker should be denied the privilege of selecting the market in which to sell his services.”
