JUBILEE SHOW After a successful two-days’ session the golden jubilee show of th* Taieri Poultry Society closed on Saturday night at Mosgiel. , An exhibit that attracted a great deal of attention was that of Mr J. Mitchell, Mosgiel. In a' specially-con-structed netting enclosure, in which! tree branches had been placed, therei were Indian peacocks, amherst, golden, and Mongolian pheasants, blue-headed parrot finches, Java sparrows, • St. Helena wax bills, Senegal wax bills* weavers, Cambasons, canaries, and goldfinches. While the peacock and pheasants sat in the branches in state* the smaller birds flew around the enclosure or pecked at the seeds. It waa a really outstanding exhibit, and a delight to bird lovers. The winners of most points were:-* Novice classes, Mrs E. J. Wilson; flying homers, Mr R. Fitzgerald; budgerigars, Mr W. J. Harrison; produce* Mr T. E. Burns; garden section, Mr W. R. Kirk; needlework, Mrs W. Korner j knitting, Miss I. Wilson; honey. MrH, Baird. At this year’s show an added attraction was the ladies’ section for needlework. A special vote of thanks was passed to the ladies who supervised and judged this section. The art union held in connection with this year’s show will be drawn in a fortnight’s time. The results of the guessing competitions were as follows: —Sheep, Messrs J* P. O’Brien and Fallowfield; pig, Miss Gwen Smeaton. . In the history of the society published last week two names of judges who had acted .in past years, were omitted—Messrs R. Brown and Coombea (Dunedin). At the social special mention was made of the work of these two men, not only as judges, but as exhibitors. At this year’s show Mr Brown secured the coveted prize for .the best bird in the show. Before the officials and representatives of visiting clubs returned to their homes a sociav hour was spent in the Fire Brigade Hall, Mr Friend presiding. Toasts were honoured, interspersed with songs and recitations, Me W. H. Townrpw presiding at the piano. The speeches covered the activities of the society throughout the past 50 years. Good years and poor years had been experienced in turn, hut it had always been possible to hold a show** and after half a century the funds were in credit. Tributes were paid to past presidents, secretaries, and committee-, mpn. Special mention Was made of the work of the current year’s president (Mr J. Friend) and secretary .(Mr George Hendry). Greetings were exchanged between the speakers on behalf of the Taieri Society and the representatives of sister clubs present. -• .
