AUSTRALIANS AT SHEFFIELD MATCH AGAINST YORKSHIRE MODERATE SCORES Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, July 2. The ground at Sheffield for the match between Yorkshire and the Australians was saturated by a thunderstorm yesterday, and the start was delayed til! 11.45. The weather was cloudy and the wicket sticky. The attendance was 35,000. The teams are; Australia. Bradman, M'Cabe, Finglotou, Badcock, Hassett, Barnes, Waite, Barnett, White, M’Cormick, Flectwood-Smith, Ward (twelfth man). Yorkshire.—Sellars, Sutcliffe, Leyland, Wood, Barker, Bowes, Verity, Hutton, Smailes, Turner, Robinson. Yorkshire won the toss and sent Australia in. The bowlers found difficulty in obtaining a foothold. Fingleton was uneasy and escaped a leg-before appeal in the first over, and he was dropped at fine, leg in the second. The wicket quickly cut _ up, and Fingleton succumbed to Smailes in the latter’s second over. Bradman when 12 made a bad stroke, and the ball dropped just short of second slip. The conditions kept the batsmen on tenterhooks. Badcock was unhappy during his short stay at the crease. Smailes, bowling off-spinners round the wicket, kept the batsman on the defensive. Bradman livened up with the arrival of Verity, and reached 27 in an hour. Ho batted splendidly under adverse conditions, placing his shots with the utmost skill. He had a narrow escape after lunch, but continued to force the pace He showed delightful footwork. Hassett also played Verity well, but when at 43 he narrowly escaped being caught. He reached 50 in 100 minutes, and he then commenced to hit out brilliantly He secured 4’s and 6’s freely, but went out leg-before in attempting a pull. The Australian innings occupied 215 minutes. Sutcliffe had to retire when a ball from White popped up unexpectedly and struck him on the right hand. Waite, bowling slow off-spinners, was successful after a few overs, having Dutton -well caught at fine leg. Waite, who was bowling remarkably well took advantage of the wicket. Yorkshire’s main concern appeared to be to hang on in hope of a better wicket on Monday. Details:— AUSTRALIA.
