PHYSICAL EDUCATION

SCHOOL TO TRAIN TEACHERS AUCKLAND'S CLAIM [Special to the • Star.’) AUCKLAND, June 22. The ‘ Herald,’ in the course of an editorial to-day, says: “ With growing public recognition of the need for physical education few should oppose the advocacy by Professor Hercus, Dean of the Medical Faculty of the Otago University, of a national school to tram teachers and grant a diploma in health and physical education. Dissent is heard when Professor Hercus claims that the best centre for such a school would be Dunedin. His chief argument is that the new school would work in economically and efficiently with the Medical and Dental Schools already established in Dunedin, but these are chiefly concerned with the problems of disease, whereas the new school wil ! be engaged on problems of health. It should be kept apart from schools taking the negative line of cures. “ That is one reason for denying Dunedin’s claim now asserted over that already entered by Auckland. Important work in physical education is already being undertaken here at the Training College, A fact recognised m the appointment of a staff member. Miss Agnes Kennedy, to the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation. So promising a start .‘■hon'd not be halted in favour of Duuclm, especially when on the authority of the Director of School Hygiene, Dr Elizabeth Gunn, the college is ‘ the finest ia Key: Zealand.’ ”-
