POOLING SYSTEM FOR TRANSPORT

EXTENDIHG TO MANY FREIGHTS CARRIERS WARNED ROT TO OBSTRUCT [Per United Fhess Association.) AUCKLAND, Juno 21. Satisfaction at the introduction of E ooliug systems for the cartage of obby calves, and a warning to the carriers not to offer opposition to pools; also an outline of the policy to be followed regarding bobby calf transport, were expressed to-day by Mr E. J Phelan, the licensing authority for No. 1 transport district. “ The introduction of these pools m so many quarters reflects very creditably on the intelligence of the farmer# responsible,” said Mr Phelan. “ Several methods of marketing have been observed, but this aspect does not come within my province. In some quarters a tendency has been observed for two interests —carriers and farmers —to engage in a little jockeying for position. Some carriers have tried to make capital out of the new situation, while cases come to my notice where pool committees have been hawking prices, thus setting the carriers against one another, and have obtained rates that are not economically sound. I am_ convinced that the fairest formula is to allow the carrier 5s 6d per hour, plus 6d per mile for each four-wheeled truck, and 6s per hour, plus 7d per mile for each six-wheeled vehicle. Mr Phelan issued a warning note to carriers. Some operators had acted in a way that suggested that thejr would like to see the pools fail. “It is quite clear, however, that the pooling movement will not fail, but will spread later to other classes of freight. Already in some areas the system has been extended to lambs, and arrangements are being made in one district to extend it to pigs. It is being fostered by farmers, and is not dependent on Governmental assistance for success. Any car rier who finds himself deprived of much of his work as the result of early antagonism to a pool, will have only himself to blame.”
