The postal authorities advise that the air mails despatched via Auckland by the Niagara on May 28, and by the Narbada from Dunedin on June 1 reached London on Thursday last. Advice has been received by Mr J. W. Munro, M.P., from the Parliamentary Under-Secretary in Charge of Housing (Mr J. A. Lee, M.P ) that Cabinet has approved of the purchase of the property of the Linwoou Investment Company, situated in Roller street, North-east Valley. The property is sufficiently large to accommolate five houses
An outbreak of fire in waste material at a timber kiln in Neville street, Caversham, received the attention of the brigade at 3.35 this morning. There was no damage, and it is not known how the fire started. An automatic false alarm from premises in Stafford street was answered at 9.56 this morning, while a chimney fire in Asquith street, Caversham, was extinguished by the South Dunedin Brigade at 1.10 a.m.
Two nominations—those of Mr J. R. Bruuton and Mr W. J. Meade—have been received by the National Party for the candidature for the Dunedin Central electorate. A meeting is to be held on Thursday night to select the candidate, and only members of the party in the Dunedin Central electorate will be entitled to vote. Both Mr Brunton and Mr Meade are young lawyers, so that in some respects their claims for selection are based on similar grounds. Nominations for the party’s candidate for the Dunedin South electorate closed at noon to-day. The Benevolent Committee of the Hospital Board reports that during last month casual cases for relief involving the espeudiutre of £153 7s 3d were approved. Three other cases at a weekly cost of £1 4s also received attention.
The Hospital Board has notified the Territorial Association that the board will make up the difference between military and civil pay to any of the board’s employees while attending a Territorial Force camp.
Joseph M'Carthy, who deserted his ship in February, 1937, and has spent most of the intervening time in gaol, was sentenced by Mr Salmon, S.M., to six months’ imprisonment for the theft of two pairs of trousers, an overcoat, and a dressing gown at Patea, and two suits at Waverley.—Wanganui Press Association.
The address by the Minister of Finance (the Hon. \V. Nash) at the opening of the National Dairy Conference at St. Mary’s Hall, New Plymouth, is to be broadcast bv the main national stations, commencing at 2 o’clock to-morrow afternoon. This will result in a slight alteration being made in 4YA’s scheduled programme, the A.C.E. home science tutorial section talk being advanced from 3.15 to approximately 3.30.
