CENTRAL BANKING STUDENT

VISIT OF CANADIAN PROFESSOR (Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 20. A young Canadian, a political economist, Professor A. F. Plumtre, of the University of Toronto, arrived in Wellington to-day with his wife as passengers by the Awatea from Sydney. Professor .Plumtro said he had spent some months in Australia studying the central banking system, and he now intended to spend 10 days in New Zealand in similar researches. He intended to write a book on central banking in the British dominions. Assistant professor of economy at Toronto University, Professor Plumtre said he had never before visited this part of the world. He had, however, for a long time been in regular communication with bankers in various British dominions, and had now taken the opportunity of visiting them. He emphasised that his visit was a purely private one and had not been made at • the behest of any Government or public body. , „ • _ “ Pm quite sure I’m the first Canadian ever to think of studying this subject,” he said. The Canadians were generally ignorant of the conditions in New Zealand. They had heard that it was a very British country, that it was full of sheep, and that New Zealanders unaccountably resented their lamb being called mutton, but that was practically all that was known of New Zealand by the average Canadian. I suppose we know as little of your country as yon do of ours,” lie said.
