DRUNKEN DRIVERS

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The daily Press < recently informed us of the astounding news that the New Zealand Licensed Victuallers Association offered to co-operate with the Hon. R. Semple to eliminate the drunken drivers of motor vehicles. One wishes them all success, and I would appeal- to them to carry the good work further —eliminate all drunkenness. May 1 suggest a few ways in vvhich success in this direction lies? Strictly obey the licensing laws; remove all signposts on our highways which advertise alcohol (these, no doubt, suggest a drink to passing motorists) ; instead erect such, notices as “If You Drive, Don’t Drink; If You Drink, Don’t Drive.” Remove Neon light notices from all hotels which advertise thus: “West End beer is the height of good cheer.” I know of some women and children to whom it is anything but the height of good cheer, as when the breadwinner spends most, or all, of his wages on beer and other forms of alcohol; and it certainly is not good cheer to the motorist who is caught in a state of intoxication and fined £2O to £4O and his license cancelled. In my opinion, the hotelkeeper’ who supplies the motorist should have his license cancelled, too. I would also suggest to the N.Z.L.V.A. to urge the authorities not to allow alcohol to be supplied or used at danwss. Some of the dancers may have to drive a car after the dance is over. Surely the bright young people of to-day can enjoy a jolly dance without doping themselves with alcohol. Hoping the N.Z.L.V.A. will get on with the good work until drunkenness and the dire results of it will no longer be a reproach to our fair land.—l am, etc., Awaiting Results. • June 20.
