ABOUT BLACK BEARS
TWO MAIN TYPES There are two kinds of black bear, the North American and 4he Himalayan, but they are easily distinguished from each other, for the Himalayan animal wears a conspicuous white V-shaped mark on his chest.' Sometimes, when viewed from a distance, this looks remarkably like a nice white sailor collar! The Himalayan black bear is not very big, but he is a powerful fellow, and, unfortunately for people who live near his haunts he is all too fond of fruit and maize. the mountain forests, where he usually roams, to raid the orchards and crops of natives, who have the greatest difficulty in keeping him at bay. In parts of Kashmir these bears used to be so plentiful as to constitute a pest. Sometimes as many as four of them would be seen among the branches of a single fruit tree, busily engaged in feeding upon the fruit. They are indeed excellent climbers, and can shin up a trunk much faster than can the average man.
