[Prom Our Oamaru Correspondent.] THE WAITAKI BRIDGE, At the quarterly meeting of tha South Island Motor Union Mr C.’ J. Talbot (Highways Board) said work on the llakaia and Rangitata bridges was making good progress. The nest task to be tackled was the Waitaki. Tha Railway Department intended to build a new bridge, and the Highways Board was negotiating to convert the present bridge into a purely traffic bridge. W.D.F.U. Competitions at the monthly meeting of the Duntroon branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’Union resulted:—Bed jacket; Miss M. Yardley 1, Miss G. Priest and Mrs H, Harvey (equal) 2 . Successful North Otago exhibitors at the Ashburton Bird Fanciers’ Show were Messrs J. R. M’Lean, who won the South Island .championship for green budgerigar, three first prizes, one second, and five thirds; Turvey and Bermingham, New Zealand championship for grey-winged budgerigar, one second, and one third; C. L. M’Lean, who showed .the best budgerigar in the show and gained three second prizes; 1). N. Mahan, three seconds and .two thirds for budgerigars; A. Napier, three first for budgerigars; W. M‘D. Rae, three firsts and a special, three seconds, and one third for budgerigars; H. E. .Stamford, four firsts and a special, and two seconds for Old English game bantams, DRUIDS’ LODGE. A.D. Bro. S. V. Roney presided over about ,60 members and visitors at the summoned meeting of Endeavour Lodge, U.A.O.D, Assisted by M.C., Bro. R. Roney, District President Bro. J. P. M’Leod installed the officers. Sick pay (£ls 18s 4d) and funeral claims (£80) were passed for payment. Two new members were initiated. HOCKEY. In, a representative hodkey match at Oamaru on Saturday South Canterbury beat North Otago by 3 goals to 2. It was a very good game, there being a good attendance. In the first half Brown and Taylor scored for the home side, and Mayston scored for the visi-' tors. JOCKEY CLUB. At a committee meeting of the Oam* aru Jockey. Club it was decided to alter the programme for the winter meeting by making the Winter Handicap, seven furlongs, the third race and the Burnside Handicap, six furlongs, the fourth race. Mr W. R. Clarkson was appointed announcer. It was decided to protest strongly; to the Racing Club against Southland’s frivolous objection to the Oamaru Club’s New Year date, it being the seventh in succession. OBITUARY. The death occurred yesterday of Mt! Arthur Curie, a well-known and highly; respected resident of Oamaru, whose age was 65 rears, Mr Curie had been on the staff of the National Mortgage and. Agency Company for many years. Ho was a" past master of Lodge Ngapara and also was a keen angler. He is survived by Messrs Arthur Curie (Wyndham) and lan Curie (Oamaru) and 4 married daughter.
