BADMINTON

OTAGO TEAM MATCH AGAINST AUSTRALIA For tho match against an Australian team at Oamaru on June 28 the Otago Badminton Association, at a meeting last night, selected the following team to represent the province:— W. Abbott (Dunedin Twenty Club). J. Swan (Dunedin Twenty Club). Miss Mavis Kerr (Dunedin Club). Miss Betty Werner (Camac Club). The four players selected have had a good deal of experience of the game, and have all been prominent in interclub fixtures during the past few seasons. Abbott and Swan, who have been playing together for the past three years, have met with a fair amount of success at tournaments, in both singles and doubles matches. At the last Otago tournament Abbott lost his provincial title to P. Hawkesworth, the Dunedin champion, but he was successful in winning the Otago Men’s Plate. The holder of the New Zealand women’s singles title, Miss Kerr, is the strongest woman player in the Dominion. When the English professional, J. F. Devlin, played with Miss Kerr in Dunedin two years ago, he commented favourably on her sound tactics and knowledge of the game. That was before the Otago girl annexed her Dominion title. Tho fourth member of the team, Miss Betty Werner, is also a itrong player, and should combine well with Miss Kerr in the doubles matches. Special practice matches are to he arranged at an early date for members of the team
