SOUTHLAND RACING STATISTICS Last Saturday’s meeting at Invercargill brought to a successful conclusion the 1937-38 racing season in Southland, and, thanks to good weather being experienced for all but one of the meetings, Wairio, only one club, Clifden, which was forced to race on its own course this season, has failed to improve its financial position. The racing has, on the whole, been good and interesting, and during the 23 days judicial committees have had little to worry them. Stakes have been increased by £1,086 10s from the previous season, and the totalisator returns show an increase of £43,538 10s as compared with the previous season and £99,097 10s with the amount handled in 1935-36. Southland owners and horses have done well during the season, Messrs Price 'Bros., W. IJ. Hunt, A. F. Speight, and Mrs K. Oliver heading the list of winning owners, and Wild Career, Trebleack. Rodeur, Viking, Amelita, and Mona’s Song, who head the list of winning horses, are all owned and trained in the southern province. Mr A. J. White, of Wingatni. was the most successful of the visiting owners. Other Otago owners who did well were Messrs J. P. Herlihy, G. F. Scott, and A. Ferguson. The following tables show a comparison of the stakes given and totalisator turnovers during the past three seasons, and the lists of winning owners and horses: —

DID NOT LOOK THE PART No horse lias ever won the Grand National that conformed less with what is one’s idea of the true Aintree type than Battleship, a chestnut entire, standing barely 15.2, by the great American racehorse Man-o’-War. A shapely little fellow with plenty of bone and substance, despite his lack of inches. Battleship would not disgrace a Cup field, but he appeared quite out of place among the big, long, raw-boned horses which comprised the majority of the runners in the Grand National (says an English writer). The only animal which bore the slightest resemblance to Battleship was the mare Cooleen. Battleship broke down after his victory in the American Grand National, so his trainer, Hobbs, told me. and had two seasons at the stud. Although incidents of stallions being put back into training _ are fairly common—the best example in recent years being the French horse Motrico, who subsequently won the Prix d’Arc de Triomphe. beating that good horse Goyescas—it is rare to find such a horse possessed nf the equable temperament of Battleship, who, in the words of his trainer, has the manner of a park hack. I understand Battleship leaves shortly for the United States t,o take up stud duties once again. Hobbs will be sorry to lose him, as both he and his son are very much attached to the little fellow, who became the stable pet as soon as he arrived in tin's country 18 months ago. The rise to fame of young Hobbs has been one of tb° features of the past two seasons. Whatever he has accomplished in the past, he fairly excelled himself. Splendid as was his finishing effort, the boy’s master stroke was played earlier than this. . Battleship hit the penultimate fence very hard, and Hobbs promptly gave him an easv. It must have required a deal of will power to sit and suffer at this critical part of the race and watch Boyal Danieli open up a lead of nearly four Ibngths. It was this judicious move, however, which enabled Battleship to put in a great jump at the last fence and tackle the long run in like a giant refreshed. A grand type of horse, much more our idea of’what is required to win a Grand National, is Royal Danieli, and after he had shaken off the attention of his fellow countryman he appeared all over a winner till Battleship came with that overwhelming rush and caught him in the last few strides. How splendidly two Irishmen took their defeat. It was an object lesson in how to be a good loser. Both Mr M'Nally and his jockey, Moore, who rode a perfect race, thought their horse had won, hut not a word of complaint passed their lips. They realised that the judge alone could tell which had won in so close a finish, and they accepted his decision implicitly.
JOTTINGS Turned Out for a Spell. Catalogue, who has won £2,060 in stakes this season, has been turned out for a well-earned spell. Not Handicapped. Both (Rebel Mate and Grey Honour were withdrawn from the Farewell Handicap, run to-day, before the weights appeared. Grey Honour is booked for a trip to Elderslie next month. Long Odds Offered. Some long odds were on offer in the Claremont Hack Handicap at Washdyke on Thursday. Auctor had only £1 invested on his winning chance, Mazamarch £2 IDs, and Robant and Birch Boy £4 each in a pool of over £SOO. Her Last Race. Prior to her winning the Kingsdown Hack Handicap on Thursday it was stated that Shirred Ribbon was having her last race, as her owner, Mrs W. Richmond, of Hawke’s Bay, intends retiring her to the stud. Took No Chances. . At the Oamaru Trotting Club’s Meeting a fortnight ago Guncase was almost capsized at the start when Easter Rush collided with him. Beginning very smartly in the Opihi Trot*on Thursday, his driver took no chances of another accident, and had him well out in front all the way. Silver Ring, Many West Coast racing men expect Silver Ring to stage a “ come back ” to his best form. In the Timaru Cup he was handy at the home turn, but over the final stages he lacked both the speed and stamina to get into the money. Silver (Ring looks well, and appeared to be quite sound. Last Refrain. By running second in the Timaru Cup, Last Refrain showed that he is returning to form, and now that the tracks are more yielding he will have to be considered in middle distance races. A year ago he was well up in
the handicaps, but is now being nicely treated, and it should not be long before he is returned a winner. Went Amiss. Wagner, who would have been fancied in the Kingsdowu Handicap at Washdyke on Thursday, contracted an illness on the train journey to the meeting, and had to be withdrawn from his engagement. Polydora was also off colour when she arrived at Washdyke, and was sent home again without racing at the fixture. The Timaru Cup Winner. Mungatoon, winner -of this year’s Timaru Cup, is owned in the Waikato, but trained at Riccarton by F. A. Roberts, who took over Mr J. S. Shaw’s stable and team when the latter was appointed a stipendiary steward by the New Zealand Trotting Association. This marked Mungatoon’s third success in the South Island, his previous wins being scored at the West Coast, and Amberley meetings. Fields Too Big. The fields at Washdyke in several of the races on Thursday were too big to attract good betting. There were 19 in the first flat race, and a similar number in the first trot, with no fewer than 17 off the front mark. During the afternoon only one first favourite was returned a winner, and the big dividends returned in the other races also restricted the wagering. Breeding of Remounts. Concerning the announcement from Wellington that subsidies for owners of stallions suitable for breeding remounts will be available this season, most of the money required for this expenditure is being supplied by racing and trotting clubs, by subsidising the fund by one shilling out of every £IOO that goes through the totalisator. Likely To Make Good Over Country. Flashlight, winner of the steeplechase at Timaru on Thursday, is likely to make good at the cross-country game. He is a six-year-old gelding by Shambles from Snapshot, and trained by T. H. Gillett at Riccarton. On Thursday he was always handy to the leaders hand two furlongs from home easily headed them off. This was his first start across country, and he promises to make good at the game. Studley Royal. Studley Royal now has his trainer, as well as the public, puzzled. In the Timaru Cup on Thursday his trainer, F. D. Jones, at one time one of the best horsemen ever seen in the Dominion, told L. J. Ellis to ride Studley Royal according to his own judgment. The Paper Money gelding was handy to the leaders at the straight entrance, and appeared to be pulling, but immediately Ellis sat down to ride him home Studley Royal failed to respond, and to finish seventh was the best he, could do. No Cause for Inquiry. When Flashlight headed Sunward over 50yds before jumping the last fence in the Craigmore Hack Steeplechase on Thursday, his rider, R. Register, took him to the outer half of the fence. W. T. Kitto, rider of Sunward, with a view to obtaining a shorter run home, took his mount to the inside of this fence. After the race the latter’s owner, Mr C. L. Orfaell, asked for an inquiry into what happened at this fence, but the Judicial Committee decided that there was no evidence of any interference and no action was taken.
