CAUGHT USING EXPLOSIVES

TWO YEARS’ HARD LABOUR FIVE BURGLARY CHARGES Having admitted five charges of breaking and entering shops and warehouses, Thomas William Parry appeared for sentence in the Supreme Court this morning. n n Parry was represented by Mr 0. G. Steven's, who said that unfortunately the prisoner had been before the courts previously. It appeared, however, that on this occasion he was under the influence of liquor. Very little could be said in extenuation of his conduct other than that he committed these crimes with little or no intention of gain. Apparently he had concentrated on tobacco. Mr Justice Kennedy: He was found opening a safe with explosives, Mr Stevens. That was not concentrating on tobacco. Mr Stevens pointed out that practically all the goods missing seemed to be tobacco, although he took a small sum of money in one case. When Parry was arrested ho gave the police every assistance in clearing the case up. The Crown Prosecutor (Mr F. B. Adams) intimated that ho had nothing to add.

His Honour, addressing tlio prisoner, said that lie liad committed crimes at Waitahuna, Milton, and Mosgiol, using a car to get about the country. At Mosgiel he used explosives, and in view of this fact his offences could not be regarded as anything but serious. “ You have a had record for dishonesty,” concluded His Honour. “ The sentence of the court is that yon be imprisoned with hard labour for two years on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent.”
