Butler, replying to a question in the House of Commons, said the Government was forclu to the conclusion that the bombing of the steamer Stanhope at Valencia on May 7 was deliberate, and had strongly protested to the burgos authorities and requested that precautions be taken that there should bo no recurrence. RECALLED TO BARCELONA CONSUL-GENERAL AT GENEVA. GENEVA, May 11, (Received May 12, at 8 a.m.) Senor Cherif, the Spanish ConsulGeneral at Geneva, and brother-in-law of Senor Azana, has been recalled to Barcelona, reportedly because he encouraged suggestions of mediation in the Spanish war. UNITED STATES ARMS EMBARGO QUESTIONS IN COMMONS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 11. (Received May 12, at 1 p.m.) Questioned on reports of the possible removal of the embargo on arms for the Spanish Government by the United States, the Prime Minister told the House of Commons that the United States Government had not announced its intentions and it was impossible to say whether the joint resolution of Congress prohibiting the export of arms to Swain would he repealed, amended, or loft unchanged. In a supplementary question. Mr Chamberlain was asked if there was any foundation for the statement that the British Government was trying to discourage the United States from taking any action.
