BALLOON BARRAGE
SQUADRONS FOR LONDON'S DEFENCE « AIR MINISTRY'S ANNOUNCEMENT Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 11. The Air Ministry announces that the formation of the first three balloon barrage squadrons for the defence of London against air raids will be begun next Monday. Eventually there will be 10 squadrons, comprising 500 balloons. The total personnel required will be about 6,000 officers and men. The minimum age limit at enlistment is 38. The object of the barrage is to force enemy aircraft to a height at which it can be effectively attacked by fighter planes and anti-aircraft guns. An earth balloon will be attached a steel cable to a ground winch. The cable will be strong enough to bring down any aeroplane colliding with it- ■
