AUCKLAND COUNCIL
CITIZENS' CANDIDATES IN LEAD [Per (Jniteb Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 11. The earliest returns tor the Auckland City Council show that the Citizens’ Committee candidates occupy the first 14 places, with the Labour candidate Mr J. Sayegh, who also contested the mayoralty, in fifteenth position. There are, however, 40 more returns to come. Citizens’ or Independent candidates won eight of the ten Auckland suburban mayoralties which were contested, and the only Labour successes were the capture of Onehunga and New Lynn Borough. Labour challenges were made for most of the other mayoralties, but were resisted with comparative ease. A triangular contest for the important Mount Eden mayoralty resulted in a victory for the Householders’ candidate, but in a four-sided contest for New Lynn the Labour candidate was victorious. Three sitting Mayors were defeated, two going down before Labour.
