JOTTINGS Reminder. Owners and trainers are reminded that handicaps for the second day of the Forbury Park Meeting will be declared at the club’s office at 7 o’clock this, evening, and acceptances close at 8 o’clock. - To be Tried as.a Hurdler. Privet, whose racing in the past has ’been done on the flat, has been entered for the hurdle races at Washdyke. South Canterbury Nominations. The nominations .received for the South Canterbury. Jockey Club’s Meeting next week total 365, or 10 more than last, year’s total. • Coming Back to Form. Paper Slipper pleased the track watchers at Riccarton on Tuesday morning by running six furlongs in Imin 15 3-ssec, the fastest time recorded over that distance during the morning. He will be ridden by G. H. Humphries in the Flying Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. An Alteration. In the first programme issued by the Ashburton Trotting Club the conditions of the All-aged Stakes provided for four-year-old classic winners to be on 48yds behind. They will now be on 60yds behind. .The only horse affected is Parisienne. s Holds a Strong Hand. F. W. Ellis will have three.representatives—Galleon, Amelita, and Coxcomb —in the Awarua Handicap, the chief event at Invercargill on All three have been getting through good work. A Well-bred Youngster. ’ The Invercargill trairier J. A. Rowland has been handling-a yearling filly by Paper Money from Lady Blissful by Elysian from Lady Wayward IT. The youngster was bred by Mr F. J.-Trail, of Riverton, and’ has been leased by Mr A. C. Mills. ' ,

Studley -Royal. L. J. Ellis is to have the mount on Studley Royal’-'in the, Ashburton Cup on Saturday. At Riccarton on Tuesday morning the Dunedin Cup winner ran a mile in Imin 45sec, the best_ gallop of the morning. The long straight at Ashburton will be all in Studley Royal's favour. ’

L. J. Ellis Still Well Ahead. L. J. Ellis notched two points at Arnberley, while C. G. Goulsbro had- a blank day at Pukekohe. O. L. Goulsbro won three: races at Nelson on the same afternoon, but these should not be credited to his better-known relative.

Fields May Be Too Big. A substantial; reduction in the num-bers-ih the Claremont and Southburn Handicaps- at Washdyke is desirable on acceptance night; otherwise a division Will be compulsory, and divided races are vpry inconvenient in the short winter days. The safety number at the six-furlong post is 24 bn this course. Obituary. The death occurred last week of Mr H. T. Jones, father of the Riccarton trainer, F. D. Jones..,, He had been ailing for some time, and his death was not unexpected. The late Mr Jones always took a keen -interest in sport, arid he was a frequent visitor to the Riccarton tracks. Silver Ring at Ashburton. After his win over seven furlongs arid second in a race over a mile and a-quar-ter, on the West Coast last month it will be interesting to see how Silver Ring shapes in the Ashburton Cup, on Saturday. He has 9.4 to carry, and will be up against much better horses than he beat at the Coast fixture. Record Odds. At Aintree on Grand National Day the official double was picked only once, and Battleship (40 to 1), winner of the Grand National, and Barbadeche (100 to 8), winner of the Bickerstaffe Maiden Plate, returned a dividend of £5,062 for 10s. This beats the previous record of £4,679 established last year at Manchester. It is revealed that Lord Digby was the lucky .punter.; Hb was driving away from the course, little suspectirig his luck, wheii.the news reached him. Dictate To Be Spelled. A. M'Aulay lias eased Dictate in his work, and the horse will have a spell before he is required to race again. The Chief Ruler gelding has had a good season, during which he won four races and , was placed in 10 others, the most pleasing feature of his form being his displays of stamina,in the autumn. Ho should benefit by a rest, though it may not last long, and he should come back to do a lot more winning next season. A Useful Gallop. At Invercargill on Tuesday morning’ Coxcomb shaded Amelita and Galleon over a mile in Imin 52see —the best effort over the distance for the morning. They ran the first two in 28sec, three in 40 2-ssec, half in 55sec, the six in Imin 22 2-ssec, and the last half in 57sec. Galleon.lost several lengths over the first half-mile, but he gathered in the other pair at the finish, and was right up with them. This was Coxcomb’s best gallop for some time. Amelita was doing her work nicely.

A Sydney Horseman. A. recent arrival from Sydney in Eric Stewart, riding at 7.4, intends trying New Zealand. He will be present_ at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, and has been doing riding work at Wingatui. Stewart has had 19 winning mounts in_ Australia, ana intends making Dunedin his headquarters until after the Wingatui Winter Meeting.

Poor Horsemanship. , . (I’ni» low scale of weights at Egmont gave good ; jockeys . few opportunities, and,B; H... Morris was able to obtain only one mount in the two days (says the ‘Dominion’). A 'premium was put on light-weight horsemen, and such was the scarcity of competent riders that more than one trainer scratched sooner than run, and several put up pounds overweight to get riders like Wilson, Broughton,, arid, WigginS. The Kentucky Derby Winner. No records are available to identify Lawrin, winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby, who apparently made no particular showing as a tVvo-year-ojd. Dawber, who finished second, a chestnut colt by Pennant from Ship of War, was bought as a yearling at the C. V. Whitney dispersal sale in November. 11)36. by Mr W. ’Dupont for 29.000 dollars. Can’t Wait, third, a chestnut gelding by Victorian—Wing Bee, won five of his 10 races'as a two-year-old and was bought as a yearliiig by Mr Myron Selznick.- ‘ ' ; Maiden’s Quick Rise. Gillie, who won the Starky Memorial Handicap at Amberley, on Saturday, performed, an unusual feat., for he was a maiden performer, and had rim fourth in his own class earlier in the day. The open event was run at a very slow pace ; early, and this suited ' the novice—a three-year-old half brother by Lord Warden, to Scratchmere Scar, being out of the Martian mare Vennacber. He is raced by his breeder, Mr G. Fulton,, and is trained by H. Nurse. As is so often the case. Gillie was well fancied for his maiden engagement, and comparatively neglected when he won. Out For the Winter. Cutts brother's have eased up a few of their horses, but other members of the team are being, kept going with a view to racing through the winter. Wild Chase is on the easy Hist and will not do any more racing until the spring. He has had an unlucky season, for after running second to Cerne Abbas in the 'New Zealand Cup he failed to repeat his . best form. Possibly he will come baeik after a rest to show his best form again at five years. Good’ Passage is another to be spelled. The Winning Hit" two-year-old is a smart galloper, although her record has been tarnished by unruly barrier manners, ; a surprising trait in a filly that is most docile under any other conditions. Provided This .trouble is overcome, Good Passage should come back to show good race form next season. ■ ■ Good Horsemanship. The keenest finish of the day at the Franklin Meeting last Saturday was that for the Onewhero Steeples, when Lucidus, after apparently having struck his colours to Kinkle, beat the other by the narrowest margin in a filial supreme effort by horse and rider. It was a gallant affair between two, tired, but game, ’chasers, and the; honours were fairly even. Windsor Lad put up a good performance for third, in spite of the fact that he was 10 lengths away from the other two at the finish, and the race should improve him greatly. My Money and London fell before reaching the stands double the first time. Mio Lume was going very well just behind Windsor Lad, Count Roussillon, and Lucidus five furlongs from home, when he chanced a fence and met a fate. Lucidas was ridden by R. C. Trillo, .who last season did most of his riding in the south.
