WEIGHT-LIFTING

RECORDS BROKEN MATCH AT NEW PLYMOUTH. The first official strength test under the auspices of the New Zealand Amateur Weight-lifters’ Association was held at New Plymouth recently. Mr J. Elliot, founder and honorary secretary of the association, arrived from Auckland specially to refreee the match between E. Robson, Stratford, middleweight champion of Taranaki, and C. A. Meier, Warea, light heavy-weight champion of Taranaki. This conest was held at catch weighst, and resulted in a win for Meier with a total of 5251 b on the three Olympic lifts. Robson’s total of 4701 b was very good, considering he was giving away a stone in bodyweight. Meier registered the following successes in special attempts on eight New Zealand amateur records, and one Australian record, previous records being in parentheses:—Left-hand curl, 621 b (611 b), light heavy-weight: left-hand snatch, 1401 b (129i1b), light heavyweight record; left-hand snatch, 1401 b (134J1b), heavy-weight; two hands clean and jerk behind neck, 2111 b (1961 b), light heavy-weight and heavyweight; left-hand dead lift, 3221 b (3061 b), light heavy-weight and heavyweight ; two hands dead lift, 5001 b (491i1b), light heavy-weight and heavy-weight. The latter also constitutes a new Australian and New Zealand light heavy-weight record, the old one having stood at 4971 b since 1929.
