BUSH MENACED

DEER DEPREDATIDNS EROSION IN STEEP COUNTRY [Peb United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Apl. 20.. One of the, official parties engaged in' destroying deer has lately been working in the picturesque Urewefa bush country on the east coast, where the .animals w,ere.found to be great in numbers and doing considerable damage. ,The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry) stated to-day that the officers had been aware that deer were numerous within the territory bounded by the Parahaki stream and the Upper Wairoa River, but had not expected to find them in such numbers. , “ One report I have.” Mr Parry added, “ shows that the beautiful bush is badly menaced by deer, and as the country is very steep erosion in its early stages is already to be seen. Splendid work is being done by the men employed in their endeavours to arrest the menace, as is shown by frequent communications . received from land owners.”’
