(Received March 30, at 8 a.m.) Reinforced by eight divisions, the Japanese claim that they are fighting back furiously north of the TientsinPukow railway. The Chinese claim that they are holding all positions won. The fighting raged throughout the night. All villages in a hundred square miles were wiped off the map. A JAPANESE CLAIM TERRIFIC SLAUGHTER INFLICTED. LONDON, March 29. ‘ The Times ’ correspondent at Peking says the Japanese claim that they inflicted terrific slaughter on the Chinese at Shantung and Shansi. General, Li Ying, vice-commander of the partisan army of the Central Government, is reported to have surrendered at Linhsien.
OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOUR A BRITISH PROTEST. SHANGHAI, March 29. (Received March 30, at llya.m.) The British military authorities strongly protested to the Japanese Commander-In-Chief against the recent behaviour of the military police, who continue to threaten officers and sentries with firearms in the British defence sector. Britishers will be instructed in the future to take suitable action in the event of their being struck or threatened. EBB AND FLOW OF BATTLE HANKOW, March 29. (Received March 30, at 1 ip.m.) The Japanese, heavily reinforced on the Hsuohow front, claim that they recaptured Lincheng and Tsining, but the Chinese again surrounded Lincheng and are rushing up fresh troops.
FURTHER CHINESE SUCCESSES THIRTY THOUSAND JAPANESE CUT OFF \ HANKOW, March ‘ 29. (Received March 30, at 11 a.m.) " Thirty thousand Japanese mechanised troops, cut off from the rear, are making a desperate attempt to break the encircling Chinese. Fighting continues along a 50mile line.from Lincheng toiaierchwang, where there is every possibility that the Japanese will be engulfed. The Chinese report further successes on a wide front. Chinese guerilla forces captured Hohsien, in North-west China. General Chan-shan’s forces have recovered Saraclii, a city in Inner Mongolia, where 4,000 troops of the puppet State surrendered.
