DIRECTOR OF MEDICINE
IMPORTANT AUCKLAND HOSPITAL APPOINTMENTS DR C. R. BURNS, OF DUNEDIN, CHOSEN [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, March 1. The Auckland Hospital Board tonight made appointments to the two new positions of director of surgery and director of medicine at the Auckland Hospital. ' The appointees are: —- * Surgery: Mr John Maxwell Clarke, M. 8., Oh.M. (N.Z.), F.R.C.S. (Eng.), P.R.C.S. (Australasia), of New Flymouth. , Medicine: Dr Charles Ritchie Burns, M.D. (JLZ.), M.R.C.P., of Dunedin., There were" eight applicants for the surgical post and, six for the medical. Both were offered to New Zealand practitioners only. The salaries are £1,500, rising to £2,000. ■ The appointments were those recommended by the Select Advisory Committee sitting at Wellington, and have been approved by tlje Health Department.
Mr Clarke was medical superintendent and surgeon to the New Plymouth Hospital from 1926 to 1930, and since then has been consulting surgeon to the’hospital. Dr Burns, who is temporarily studying in London, has been a consulting physician at Dunedin and clinical lecturer at . the Otago University since 1928.
Both have had distinguished careers at Otago University and subsequently.
