GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council was held last night; present were the Deputy-mayor (Cr G. A. Orange, in the chair), Crs'J. A. Brown, E. Hopewell, A. M'Gregor, T. Tomkins, and J. C. Russell. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Borough Engineer reported as follows: Main Highways.—Dunedin-Invercar-gill: The work done on this highway consists of attention to the shoulders and repainting of pedestrian crossings. The annual repairs have not yet been commenced. Green Island - Taieri Mouth: Messrs Fulton, Hogan Ltd, have not yet completed their work. The balance of the road has been repaired, and l after the work has consolidated any depressions will be filled with plant mix. The road is in fair order. Kaikorai<Valley Highway: Grading has been carried out regularly, and the highway is in good repair. Building Permits.—lt was recommended that two building permits to the value of £1,338 be issued. Kerbing and Channelling.—Considerable progress has been made with kerbing and channelling, a distance of 36 chains having been completed on the north side of the main highway from Kane’s crossing to Abbotsford road and one and a-half chains on the south side. The asphalting has been completed to Runciman street, and will be continued towards Abbotsford road. When this work is completed it is proposed to do Earl street and Harraway’s road with part of the group, while the balance will continue on the south side of the main highway and work towards the south boundary. General Works.—Water_ tables and paths have been cleaned in Exmouth, Torquay, Exeter, Runciman, Shipka, Binnie, Neill, and Duddingston streets, and all material has been carted to the dump. In Abbotsford road bad portions have been scarified and graded. In Princes street the footpaths have been cleaned and surfaced with toppings. The Kaikerai Valley road from Short street to the old tunnel has been graded regularly. After the heavy rain some toppings were required on Short street footpath. Sanitary Pump.—Considerable repairs were necessary to the windmill pump supplying water to the sanitary farm, and a damaged delivery pipe was replaced. Reserves.—Miller Park had been mown regularly. It would now entail less labour as the season reached its conclusion. The privet hedge was cleaned as opportunity arose. It was recommended that the attention of the cricket club should be drawn to the evident want of care in the use of the pavilion and that it was expected to renew any damage. The Sieray lamps were the subject of an interview with the New Zealand representatives of Messrs Cory-Wright and Salmon Ltd., who were desirous of getting satisfactory service from this type of lamp. They had substituted 500 V lamps in place of some of the Sieray lamps, some of which they ?ro sending to the works in England for examination. The report was adopted. PUBLIC WORKS. The report of the Public Works Committee recommended that an opinion be obtained from the municipal solicitor as to the liability of property owners to clear gorse to the centre line of the roads in boroughs.—The report was adopted. WATER AND LIGHTING. It was recommended in the report of the Water and Lighting Committee that State highway traffic tallies be forwarded to the Main Highways Board in connection with the request for financial assistance in lighting the State highway. It was reported! that the figures, which included Sundays, were very alarming indeed. The report was adopted. RESERVES AND CEMETERY. The report of the Reserves and Cemetery Committee recommended that the Green Island School be granted the use of Miller Park free of charge for the purpose of carrying 6ut football and cricket practice and athletic training; that a meeting of all interested organisations be convened to arrange cricket fixtures for the remainder of the current season; that further inquiries be instituted in reference to land belonging to tho Department of Agriculture being transferred to tho Miller Park portion of , the Green Island Domain, The report was adopted. FINANCE. Accounts recommended to be passed for payment by the Finance Commit-
tee were: District fund, £678 4s 4d; drainage loan, £1,371 10s 4d; cinema, £SB 17s. , , , The report also recommended that the resignation of Mr H. A. Ryan, hall caretaker, be received, and that applications bo invited to fill the vacancy. It was decided to forward a letter to Mr Ryan expressing appreciation of his services.
