EVENING SPORTS

FOOTBALLERS’ RACES POPULAR GAMES REPRESENTATIVES UNPLACED Big fields were entered for the final evening sports meeting prior to the Otago championships, some fine racing being witnessed by a good attendance of spectators at the Caledonian Ground last evening. A feature of the sports was the large entries in the races for footballers. Recently these have become very popular, and the attraction certainly justifies its inclusion on the programme. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Otago Centre of the Now Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and, there was provision for all branches of track and field athletics, besides women’s and cycling events. Three Empire Games athletes—T. Allen, A. R. Gcddes, and H. J. Tyrie-—competed, but they were unable to wipe off the handicaps, and were unplaced in their respective races. The mile was won in fine style by B. W. Nixon, of the University Club. He made good use of his 75yds grant to win easing up. Geddes finished well back, in about fifth place, taking things easily. A. A. Cameron, the Otago field events champion, turned out in the 220yds hurdles to take first place in his heat, but was 'unplaced in the final. The Sivortsen brothers, cyclists, started from scratch to take the first two places in the half-mile President’s Cup, heading a field of 10 starters. At the conclusion of the racing addresses on the Empire-Games were delivered by Allen, Geddes, and Tyrie. Results: — ONE MILE. B. W. Nixon (University), 75yds ... 1 1.
