WOMAN'S 57 OFFENCES REFORMATIVE DETENTION ORDERED [Pee United Press Association.] PALMERSTON N., February 28. Reformative detention for a period not exceeding 12 months was the sentence imposed by Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court on Margaret Mathiesou Scott Hart, aged 33, nurried, who appeared on 57 charges of shop-Jiftiug involving a total value of £49 18s 7d. The offences were stated to have occurred at Palmerston North, Pahiatua, Levin, Wanganui, and Fcilding. Detective Sergeant Meiklojohn told the co&rt that the accused was arrested in Pahiatua after making a raid on a number of shops there. In a room which she shared with a man in Palmerston North was found a large quantify of goods of every conceivable description. She admitted that she had stolen them. It seemed that her activities had been going on for 15 months. In her room £217 2s 2d in money was found. The Magistrate said that-the probation officer had not recommended probation, which, in fact. His Worship said, he did not think he could give. It had not been an odd charge of shoplifting. The accused had carried out systematic thieving all round the district.
