SURF LIFE-SAVING

DISPLAYS AT ST. CLAIR

Favourable . conditions prevailed for a display of life saving at St. Clair beach yesterday afternoon by teams from the St. Clair and St. Kilda Life

Saving Clubs, particular interest be- . ing taken in the exhibition of the ✓ champion St. Clair six-man team which won ths -Nelson .Shield at the recent New Zealand championships at Christchurch. The display commenced with a march past by the three teams competing—the St. Clair senior and junior teams and the St. Kilda team. The four-man alarm competition resulted in a win for the St. Clair juniors. In the timing of resuscitation St. Clair A lost half a'point and each of the other teams lost one point. The St. Clair junior beltman put_ up' an excellent performance in reaching the patient at the buoy in 20sec faster time than St. Kilda, with St. Clair A 2sec further bade. By this performance the juniors gained two and a-half points, which gave them the victory. The three teams also competed _ in a competition with conditions similar ,to those for the Nelson Shield competition. This was watched with great interest, and was won easily by the St. Clair seniors. Ah interesting canoe race was also held around the buoys, the Islander being the winning boat. Displays of shooting the breakers in canoes followed, and these were greatly enjoyed by the spectators. It has been decided that the final night next Saturday of the St. Clair Improvement Society’s carnival will be a special benefit in order to provide funds for buying a surf boat and other equipment for the St. Clair Life Saving Club. This gesture by the society is in recognition of the club’s -performance in winning the Nelspn Shield.
