NOTES ON THE RACING From an even start in the Gore High-weight Handicap Coat of Arms, Pink Del, Last Post, and Poniard raced abreast through and out of the straight. Going to the back Co'-t of Arms and Pink Del drew out two lengths clear from Last Popt and Poniard, who were three lengths in front of the others. Rounding the far turn Last Post dropped out, and Pink Del just headed Coat of Arms, with Poniard and The Surgeon next. Pink Del was first into the straight from Poniard, Coat of Arms, and The Surgeon. Poinard, who was a short-priced favourite, took charge at the distance, but had to be ridden right out to beat The Surgeon, ■who finished very strongly half a length away. Pink Del was two lengths off third: then came Delrain, Last Post, and Double Shot. • « • • Valmarch, who was a strong order for the Longford Hack Handicap, was one of the smartest to jump out from a bad start, and led AVestern Song, Ballad, and Gipsy Fair along the back find into the straight. Then he drew right away and won by six lengths from Peony Rose who was fifth into the straight, and finished half a length in front of Moana’s Song, who also came from a long way back. AA’estern Song, Ballad, and Night AA'ings were next.

The betting on the Electric Trot was disappointing, and .Drumbunnif and Dawn Direct were the best fancied. Mulguy, Dawn Direct, June Tide, and Drumbunnif went away slowly, and Provincial led out from Dora Lindsay, Glen Elad, and Sun Gauge. At the end of half a mile Glen Elad ran into second place, and before reaching the back had joined Provincial in the lead. Kentucky Sun moved up fast along the back, and at the end of a mile Provincial and Glen Elad were racing together about three lengths in front of Sun Gauge and Kentucky Sun. Glen Elad took charge on the home turn and had to be driven right out to beat Kentucky Sun a short neck, with Sun Gauge a short length away third, a length and a-half in front of Provincial. Drumbunnif and Dora Lindsay were next.

The withdrawal of Amelita from the Racing Club Handicap left only five starters, and Galleon monopolised the wagering, starting the shortest-priced favourite on both machines seen out in Southland this season. After passing the stand (two furlongs) Pink Robe streaked away, and racing past the six furlong post was four lengths clear from Grand Finale, with the favourite on the latter’s girth. With half a mile to go Galleon moved up to within two lengths of Pink Robe, and caught her on the home turn, where Island Linnet ran into third place. At the distance Galleon appeared to be winning comfortably, but Pink Robe came again, and there was only a head separating them at the finish. Island Linnet was three lengths off third, seven lengths in front of Grand Finale. The time, 2min ssec, constitutes a new track record. From a bad start in the Novice Handicap Dolita, Guste, and Armayle were slow to begin, and Free Service was the first to jump out. At the end of a furlong Foxlove took charge from Silver Choir and Astaire. Silver Choir just headed Foxglove at the far turn, and they were followed by Girate, Astaire, and Gay Vixen. Before reaching the home turn Foxlove had joined Silver Choir, and this pair led Astaire and Gay Vixen into the straight. Foxlove then drew away to win by two lengths from Astaire, who beat Gay Vixen by a length and a-half. Then followed Wyn, Silver Choir, and Ardmayle, * • * • Rodeur and Janet Gaynor were equally backed on the straight-out machine for the Croydon Handicap and monopolised the betting. Janet Gaynor was a little slow to jump out, and Irish Birdcatcher led for nearly a furlong, then he was joined by Viking and Janet Gaynor, with Rodeur just in behind. At the far turn Viking was a length clear from Janet Gaynor and Irish Birdcatcher, then Janet Gaynor began to drift, and Beam to move up. Viking was first into the straight from Beam, Irish Birdcatcher, and Rodeur. At the distance Beam had Viking’s measure, then Rodeur put in a belated run and only failed to catch Beam by a nose. Viking was three-quarters of a length away third, a head in front of Irish Birdcatcher, with Janet Gaynor a dozen lengths further back and last. *•* * • Edith Grattan and the GrattanellaGold Streak bracket carried more than half the. money invested on the straight-out machine, and for about a mile and a-quarter had an interesting struggle' out in front. Then Edith Grattan gave way and Grattanella led into the straight from Sydney Grand, Edith Grattan, and Bonnie Brydone. Grattanella easily held his own in the run home, beating Sydney Grand by a short length, with Bonnie Brydone a nose away third. Edith Grattan was fourth, with Gay Avon and Capricorn next. • * «• * Roy Bun, who was meeting Sailing Lady on 121 b better terms for a two lengths beating over the same distance at Whiten last week, was slightly better fancied than the mare for the Summer Hack Handicap, hut ran very much below his Winton form. Coxcomb led Sailing Lady out of the straight, then the latter joined him, and at the end of two furlongs had drawn well clear. Roy Bun ran up into second place at the far turn, but could make no impression on Sailing Lady, who won well by three lengths from Coxcomb, who beat the favourite by two lengths. Lochie River was over a dozen lengths away.
