A TOY ELEPHANT FOR BABY
This solid “Jumbo” is made of strong oilcloth, Fig. 1. You will notice that it has only two legs; this makes it easier to make. The elephant can be any size you wish; first sketch the outline on a piece of papdr, copying it from Fig. 2, enlarging the squares according to the size you require the finished toy. When the pattern is drawn cut two identical pieces in strong material (oilcloth); they must be cut with the wrong sides facing one another, so as to face the right way when you sew them together at a later stage. The tusks, ears, and tail need not be thought of yet; they are attached later on. Now cut » long strip of material
and sew it along the edge of one of the shapes with casting stitches on the wrong side, as shown in Fig. 3. The strip can quite well be rather wide, as this will make the elephant stand up better. Shape the strip as you sew it on, so that the neck, head, and trunk are a little narrower than the body and legs. Having done this,, you can commence sewing on the second shape, but as yet only along the top edge of the back and head. Now you will need some wood shavings, preferably not too coarse, which are pressed into the different limbs of the elephant with a piece of wood. Stuff the animal as tightly as you possibly can; you may probably think that it is far too hard to begin with, but it will become softer after a short time has elapsed. Finish the stuffing with one of the legs, and sew them together last of all. Stick on the ears with some very strong glue (secootine). These are of the same material as the animal itself. The tusks are made out of a piece of white wash-leather from an old pair of gloves \ these, too, are studk on, after which Jumbo must have a short tail made out of a piece of string. It is stitched on firmly and unravelled a little at the end.
