'THE WHIRLIGIG OF TIME ’

TALKS SERIES FROM NATIONAL STATIONS Following the policy of the last two ■ years, the .National Broadcasting Service is arranging series of 7.30- p.m. talks at the four main stations during the “ winter session ” of 1938. The general theme this year is ‘ The 'Whirligig of Time,’ the idea being to illustrate the changes that time brings in various activities and ideals of mankind. The political leader acclaimed ' to-day may be denounced to-morrow, or ’the prophet who is stoned to-day may be canonised to-morrow. Ideas regarded as treasonable ,in one age may be accepted in the following age; our customs, our manners and morals, our dress, and our amusements all change. [We have only to think of the upe and downs in the treatment of women; we have the Victorian young lady who could hot go out even in the daytime unchaperoned, contrasted with the freedom that is given to girls as a matter of course to-day. We see also duelling accepted only a century ago in England as a ■ proper means of. settling disputes, but now it is entirely dis-__ predited. It is the aim of the National Broadcasting Service to illustrate as far as possible these changes in ideas, policies, and habits.' The questions to be dealt ■with range from political revolution to changes in manners and'dress. These talks will be given on different nights of the week—from 2YA on Monday, 4YA on Tuesday, 3YA on Wednesday, and IYA on Thursday. The whole course at 3YA will be taken up with personalities—that_ is to Bay, the theme, ‘ The Whirligig of JTime,’ will be illustrated by studies of .various great men throughout history.
