SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

(From Our Balclutha Correspondent.) SWIMMING CARNIVAL. The Balclutha Amateur Swimming Club held a very successful evening carnival in the municipal baths on Thursday under ideal conditions. The weather was fine, and there was a large attendance of the general public, showing that more interest than usual is being taken in the work of the club. The events run off were the boys’ and girls’ junior championships, events in the intermediate championships, and the 220yds senior championship, points in which will be included in next Saturday’s total. Owing to the failing light it was not possible to complete the programme set out, but it will be_ completed one evening next week prior_ to the big open carnival. The swimming generally was good, and some close finishes were seen. Members of the club and others interested carried out the evening’s entertainment very efficiently. Results: — The first event was that in which primary school children who are members of the club competed for bathing suits donated by Mr D. Lattimore, Balclutha, for the most improved boy and girl. This was very keenly contested, and the children showed that the instruction given had been of help to them. In the girls’ _ competition May Buckley was first, with M. Smith and M. Mackie (equal) second. The boy’s suit was won by L. Tie, with E. Paterson and John Radcliffe second.
