ST. JOHN AMBULANCE IN LONDON
A WONDERFUL VISIT \ - The New Zealand team of St. John Ambulance members sent to Loudon to take part in special celebrations in London had l a most interesting time. The members were the Misses M Carthy, Cleaver, and Paul, and they were accompanied by Mrs Betts (lady superintendent). Miss Gaby, who was in London, joined the team as leader.' in the competitions nine teams of nurses were entered, and New Zealand came seventh. They were competing against the best teams in England, South Africa, Canada, and Hongkong. The Misses M'Carthy and Paid were ninth in individual marks out of 36 entrants. They were invited to attend-10 lectures about ‘ Air Raid Precautions,’ and gained much useful knowledge. At the examination the Misses Cleaver and Paul won A 1 They attended the official reception at St. John’s Gate, an afternoon tea party at St. James Palace (given by the Duke of Connaught, Grand Prior of the order), and the inspection parade of 5,000 men and nurses at Hydp Park, the Queen inspecting for the first time in history. On the Sunday 300 men and nurses marched (ip the Cenotaph and placed wreaths there. An Empire dinner was given at the Hotel Great Central, and the Overseas Nursing Divisions presented Mrs Dent (chief lady superintendent) with a silver salver. They were invited to Buckingham Palace - when the King invested 137 members, including the Duchess of Gloucester and Duchess of Kent. They were invited to tea at the House of Lords, being received by Lord Onslow. They had other delightful outings, including one at- the home of Lord and Lady Bledisloe in Gloucestershire. >
