PORT NICHOLSON WIHS FIRST TEST (Per United Press Association). PALMERSTON, N„ Feb. 23. The Dominion Band Contest was continued to-day. Port Nicholson won the first selection, A Grade test, which was held this evening. Results; —• E FEAT TENOR HORN R. Francis (St. Hilda), 80 points .. 1 F. Ormrod (Port Nicholson), 79 .. 2 H. Parsonage (Port Nicholson), 78 .. 3 B FLAT CORNET CHAMPIONSHIP A. Morton (Blind Institute, Auckland), 92 points 1 C. Gardner (Auckland Regimental), 84 2 H. F. Vincent (Port Nicholson), 78 3 The winner of the cornet championship is 18 years old, and has never seen a printed note of music in his life, everything having to be transcribed in Braille for him. He won the New Zealand Championship two years ago at his first competitive effort. A GRADE TEST The following were the placings In first selection, A Grade test: —Port Nicholson Silver, Wanganui Garrison, Timaru Municipal, Wellington Tramways, Auckland Artillery, Palmerston North Garrison, Auckland First Battalion. The points will be declared at the conclusion of the second selection on Friday night. At the conclusion of the test selection to-night, feeling reference was made to the death of Mr Lindsay Buick, vice-president of the New Zealand Bands’ Association, and to the death of Mr P. C. Vinnell, Mayor of Timaru, whose son is a member of the Timaru Municipal Band. Reference was also made to the death of Mrs Francis, wife of a member of the Wanganui Garrison Band and mother of the conductor and another member of the same band. . .
