EXPANSION LEAGUE

COMMITTEE MEETING The monthly meeting of the executive committee of the Otago Expansion League was held on Tuesday evening, Mr G. J. Errington presiding. Other members present were Messrs W. A. Scott, R. T. Stewart, T. Scollay, R. G. Sincocfe, G. Newey, H. M. Mackay, and R, S. Black.. In connection with the proposed extension of the afforestation scheme of the City Council on . the hill areas around the city, an interesting report was submitted by the deputation of members which accompanied the visit of inspection a week ago. The extent of the present plantations and the wonderful growth of the trees were cited. The proposal to extend such plantations to reclothe the bare hillsides with fast-growing, useful timber, had the full support of the league. It was confidently asserted that no other municipal authority in the Empire possessed as large a forest area as Dunedin. Correspondence from the Buller and Canterbury Progress Leagues in connection with the proposed resumption of the annual conference of South Island leagues' was considered.—lt was pointed out that the Otago League had always supported the meetings, and strongly urged their retention. Suggestions as to the best method of attaining that objective were made, to be communicated to the other bodies. In connection with the over-crowding of the motor camps during the recent holidays, the town clerk of Queenstown, in replying to the league’s letter on the subject, said that his council promised to have the position rectified before next holiday season. A request for the league’s assistance in procuring further help for the extension of the road from Niger Hut to Mount Aspiring Station was received. —The secretary was instructed to procure further particulars of this proposal, and Mr H. M. Mackay stated that he would also make inquiries in the locality. Reports were submitted regarding the guide book which was to bo issued in March, and the necessary financial arrangements were agreed to. A most interesting and novel form of tourist publication was shown in the shape of an attractive folder, issued by Mr Pirth, the Tourist and Industry Department’s representative at Los Angeles. As this was the last meeting Mr Errington would attend prior to his departure on a visit to America and Europe, it was resolved that Mr Mackay (vice-president) be acting chairman for the balance of Mr Errington’s term of office. Mr- Mackav thanked the members, and promised his best endeavours in the interest of the league. Mr Errington briefly outlined his itinerary. During his tour, he said, he hoped to acquire a knowledge of tourist affairs, and other activities in several countries, which he hoped would be of value to the league on his return. Good wishes were extended to the president.
