FIRE BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Metropolitan Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present were Mr W. Callender (chairman), Messrs \y. A. Scott, W. W. Johnstone, J. Robinson, M. Silverstone, L. G. Wilson, John Wilson, and N. D, Anderson. THE MONTH’S WORE. The Deputy-superintendent (Mr W. R. Morrison) reported that during the month the following work was carried out:— Calls Attended.—Fires, 13; chimney fires, 5; rubbish and bush, 21. False alarms : Malicious, 4; automatic, 9; accidental, 2. Total, 54. The South Dunedin brigade attended 29 calls, Roslyn 6, and Green Island 1. The only serious fires during the month occurred in a wool and skin store, No. 207 Vogel street, on January 3, and in a dwelling, No. 8 Gourley street, St, Kilda, on January 11. Causes of Fires.—Cigarette butt, 1; hot ashes, 1; ignition of petrol, 1; overheating or tar, 1; sparks from copper fire, 1; sparks from rubbish fire, 1; sparks from destructor, 1; unknown, 6; total, 13. Properties Affected.—Attached shed, 1; detached washhouse, 1; detached washhouse and fowlhouse, 1; dwelling, 1; fence, 1; hut, 1; motor garages, 2; railway truck and contents, 1; shop and dwelling, 1; tar, 1; unoccupied factory building, 1; wool and skin store, 1. Total, 13. Chimney Fires Attended.—Central, 1; South Dunedin, 2 ; Roslyn, 2. Total, 5. Staff and Plant.—The staff was at full strength, and the members were engaged in routine duties during the month.. The plant was in good order and ready for service. St. Kilda Water Supply.—lt was gratifying to be able to report that an improvement in the water supply available for fire extinction purposes was evident during the fire in Gourley street, St. Kilda, on January 11. Both pressure and volume were sufficient for the requirements of a single effective fire stream, without having to use pumping apparatus. Malicious False Alarms.—Towards the end of December a man was apprehended by the police and charged with giving malicious false alarms of fire to the brigade. When the accused appeared in the City Police Court, he pleaded guilty to IS charges, and was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. Water Pressure. —Pressure at the various stations at 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. respectively has been:—Central, 7211) and 901 b; South Dunedin. 901 b and 1081 b; Roslyn, 1551 b and 1551 b. The report was adopted.
