AWAHOU SEAMEN

SCOPE OF DUTIES AT ISSUE [Per United Press Assocution.] WELLINGTON, February 22. A question having arisen as to the interpretation of certain clauses in the New Zealand waterside workers’ award and in the Northern Wellington and Otago and Southland seamen’s award dealing with the employment of seamen, the Arbitration Court sat to-night to interpret the awards. The court was asked by the Department of Labour—“ Whether seamen employed on the Awahou, a vessel of 208 tons net register, are entitled to drive winches and (or) handle cargo on the ship while the remainder of the loading and unloading on the ship and the wharf is done by waterside workers?” Decision was reserved.
