Hay and Miss Ruth Hay returned yesterday from a tour abroad. Mrs Andrew Secular, Matakanui, is at present staying at Green Cliffe Guest House, St. Clair. ( Mrs A. R. Falconer and Miss Colina Falconer left on Monday on a visit to the Franz Josef Glacier. Miaa Valerie Norman, Wellington, is the guest of Miss Joyce Haggitt, Albert street. Mrs C. Mr and Mrs Maurice Myers gave a 5 o’clock party on Monday in honour of Mr and Mrs Geoffrey Myers, of London, who are at present their guests. Mrs J. P. Ruth and Mrs S. Mulrooney left this morning_ for the Catholic Centenary celebrations to bo held in Auckland. Mrs Murray Fuller, Wellington, who was the guest of Miss Theomin, Royal Terrace, is now staying with Mrs F. S. Batchelor, Belmont Lane. Miss M'lnman, Christchurch, who was a competitor at the Otago croquet tournament, left yesterday to compete in the South Canterbury tournament. Mrs Reid, of Balclutha, who is a competitor at the Otago croquet tournament, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs J. C. Lucas, Mornington. Mrs J. A. Tripe, Wellington, who recently returned from a trip to England, is at present the guest of her sister, Mrs E. C. Reynolds, London street, Mr Cartledge, accompanied by the Misses Eileen and Jean Cartledge, of Melbourne, who have been the guests of Mrs J. Jackson Purdie, have left on a tour of the Southern Lakes. Mr and Mrs Maurice James, Mr and Mrs R. O. Talbot, and Mr and Mrs Allan Gray have left for the Marlborough Sounds, where they will spend a fortnight’s holiday. Miss Agnes Neill, Dunottar, left Dunedin on Saturday morning by the express and flew on Monday from Wellington to Auckland, where she will spend a holiday with relatives.

Professor Strong returned yesterday from a tour of New Zealand, which she undertook in order to raise funds for a new building for Studholme House. She spent the week-end in Christchurch as the guest of Mrs John Studholme, Middleton Grange, Miss Margaret Knight, Diploma Guider, arrived in Auckland from England by the Port Alma. She will spend several months in New Zealand conducting an extensive course of training. During her stay in Auckland she will be the guest of the Auckland provincial commissioner, Mrs 11. J. Coates.

Mrs Gordon Vaughan, of Sydney, who has been the guest of her father, Mr Peter Barr at Montpelier, left this morning -by plane for Wellington, to be present at the wedding of her brother, Mr Forsyth Barr to Miss Peacock, which will take place on Saturday in Wellington. The northern delegates to the Optical Association’s 1 conference, with their wives, who left on Saturday by the express, were given a splendid farewell on the railway station b.y several of the local members. The visitors were full of enthusiastic praise for the hospitality received while iu Dunedin.

Miss Louise Gerard, F.R.G.S., Heathcroft, England, left the Hermitage, Mount Cook, this week for Queenstown. Miss Gerard is a novelist and achieved her Fellowship while in the Congo 20 years ago. _ She has to her credit 23 novels, which have been translated into all languages. The committee of the_ Society of Women Musicians entertained Mrs H. Stansfeld Prior (president of the Women Musicians in London) at a morning tea party, held last Monday in the Otago Women’s Club. Those present were Mrs H. C. Campbell, Mrs Raynor Bell, Mrs J. Leech, Misses Mary Martin, R. Moore, L. Rattigan, A. Sinclair, E. Logie, I. Barth, and M. Paine.

The Otago Croquet Association entertained the visiting competitors at the tournament which is now in progress at a picture party at the Regent Theatre and afterwards at supper at the Vedic on Monday evening. Mrs G. A. Nelson, president of the association, acted as hostess, ami the party proved a very enjoyable one.

Pioneers and descendants of the Otago early settlers travelled to Balclutha on Saturday to attend the early settlers’ reunion there. Included were Mesdames G. Duncan, Trimwell, Smith, Selby, Ballantyne, Mitson. Misses Frances Trimwell, Irvine, Wisely, Garry, and Messrs Simon Wright, Paterson, Knight, Carver, Strong, Selby, Garry, Wright, and Ferrins.

Spending a week at the Hermitage, Mount Cook, is Lord Malcolm DouglasHamilton, who is awaiting the arrival of the English public school boys who will tour New Zealand. Lord Doug Las arrived at the Hermitage by aeroplane, and is showing his enthusiasm for mountaineering. Arrangements are being made for the public school hoys, who will come to the Mount Cook region via the Copland Pass and sjsend some days there. Mrs E. C. Reynolds (president) entertained the members of the committee of the Victoria League at afternoon tea on Monday at the Otago Women’s Club, at the conclusion of the monthly meeting. The guest of honour was Mrs Chilton, a member of the'Christchurch branch of the league, who is at present visiting Dunedin. Miss Ruth Phillips and Miss Cecily Ramsay were hostesses at a small luncheon party yesterday at the Savoy, given for Miss Dorothy Secular, whose marriage takes place to-morrow. In the afternoon Miss Scoular was the guest of honour at a tennis party given by Miss Molly Birch at her home in Egl inton road. Mr and Mrs Glynn Lloyd gave a 5 o’clock party yesterday

at their home in York Place, when the special guests of honour were Miss Dorothy Scoular and Mr Forsyth Barr. The first meeting for this year of the Green Island Women’s Institute was held in the Masonic Hall on Tuesday, February 15. The president, Miss M'Lean, occupied the chair. The Rev.' M. Armstrong gave a talk on ‘ Irish Wit and Humour,’ which was very much enjoyed by members. The roll call was ‘An Irish Story.’ The competition was ‘ A Plate of Oven Scones.’ This was won by Mrs Mason, the second prize going to Mrs Herhisou. Mrs Callender was responsibleidor the social hour, and the competition, ‘ Song Titles,’ was correctly guessed by quite a few members. Miss M‘Lean was reelected president for the ensuing year. The committee will be elected at the March meeting. The hostesses were Mesdames East, Ensor, Robinson, Martin, Armstrong, and Cuthbertson.

Mrs Webster, Mornington, was hostess at a most enjoyable party at her residence on Friday to say farewell to Mrs C. Forsyth and family and Mrs MTCay and family, who are taking up residence at Mount Eden, Auckland. Mrs Forsyth wore a blue lace frock and Mrs M‘Kay was attired in floral georgette. There was quite a large gathering of friends present, and the guests or honour were given some very nico tokens of esteem and wished a

pleasant and safe trip. On Saturday morning, when they left Dunedin by the express for their destination, another large gathering of friends assembled to finally say an revoir.

Mrs S. P. Cameron and Miss G. Farnie entertained friends at tea at the Women’s Club on Monday afternoon in honour of Mrs George Errington, who will leave nest month on a tour abroad. Those present included Mesdames E. M. Holmes, H. A. Shacklock, D. S. MTherson, A. A. Fairbairn, Butler, Misses M. and J. Park, B. Errington, and B. Snowball. Yesterday afternoon Mrs A. M'lntosli was hostess at a tea party at her home in Merchiston street, Anderson’s Bay. During the afternoon Mrs Parnham and Miss Blanche Errington rendered solos, and a competition was won by Mrs Errington and Mrs W. Henderson. The guests were Mesdames H. A. Shacklock, D. S. M'Pherson, A. Nicolls, W. Henderson E. Lawson, W. Parnham, find the Misses A. Henderson and Blanche Errington. This afternoon Mrs H. A. Shacklock and Mrs D. S. M'Pherson were joint hostesses at a tea party at the Wilford Tea Gardens, when the other guests were Mesdames D. J. Calder, Miles, A. Nicolls, E. Lawson, E. Begg, W. Parnham, W. Henderson, A. M’lntosh, T. M’Gregor, S. Shacklock, M'Call, M. A. M'Gregor, J. Shacklock, and the Misses Farnie, Seaton, Rosevear, and Blanche Errington. Songs by Mrs Parnham and Miss Errington were much enjoyed.
