Mill RETAINS BOWIE CUP OAKIE SECURES SHAMROCK GUP The annual race for the Bowie Cup was conducted by the. Ravensbourna Boating Club yesterday afternoon, when eight starters crossed the line. The wind was changeable and came in gusts, which kept the skippers of the smaller boats very . busy. - Soon after the start Lynette drew away and was closely followed by Eileen. The breeze then came off shore and ' the boats raced away in a Jong reach to the three legs. Miti gradually worked out through the other boats, but Val’s crew, who were handling their craft jn an excellent manner, hung bn to the larger yacht, and at the mark were only. Imin 30see behind. The ' wind swung round a point and a long reach was commenced for Challis’s mark. The boats were_ now strung out. the orddP being Miti, Pal, Starlight, Evelyn, Winifred, Eileen, Lynette, and Rada. Miti rounded Challis’s for the quarter to the lee mark, 4min 30seo ahead of Val, with Evelyn, which had .come up fast into third place, close- up to. Val. Several boats attempted to carry, spinnakers, and. on a number of occasions it was only smart work on the part of the for-ard hands that saved.-them from capsizing. , It was in one of these fresh squalls that Petit, sailing his Lyne’tte, actually did capsize. No alteration to the sailing order took place, except for the retirement of Eileen, which .went to the assistance of Lynette’s crew, and Rada, Miti winning after having opened nut a large gap in the beat back tb the finishing line, as the wind had iagain altered and was blowing from the north. The corrected- times are as follows:—Miti _(scr), Ihr Bmin 31sec, I; -Evelyn (llmin), Ihr 9min 57sec, 2; Val (9min), Ihr lOmin 36sec, 3. - Also started:- Winifred _(l4min). Starlight (12min), Eileen (7min), Rada (17min), Lynette (9min). Though there, were-only, three entries for, the Shamrock; Cup, ah excellent race was witnessed between tho Oakie and Pegety, with J. Barnes performing well in his Sun Ray. At tha ‘start of the race Oakie went away first, closely followed by. Pegety. and Sun Ray. Oakie held this advantage throughput the first round, and on the; second leg to the weather mark had improved his lead slightly from Pegety* Sun Ray being about three minutes behind. At this stage Sun Ray retired, leaving Pegety and Oakie to fight ill out on the run .home, Trotter, in Pegety, used excellent ’ judgment on tha run, and blanketed Oakie all the, way and had practically caught his opponent when his tiller broke in a squall, fast work preventing a capsize .on tha finishing line.
