BROAD BAY SCHOOL
SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS 'At the week-end. the celebrations in connection with the silver jubilee of the Broad Bay School were concluded. Yesterday a large number of past and present pupils attended the church parade, the service being conducted by the Rev. Mr Henderson in the Methodist Church. The weather was ideal on Saturday for the other functions. The first of these was a picnic on Mr James Nyhon’s property, the Glen, Broad Bay, at which a roll call was taken during the afternoon. Many representatives of the early days of the school were in attendance to answer their names, which were included in the 921 read out by Mr Arthur Gwyn. Among the older ex-pupils present were Mr John Wellbourn, Mrs E. M. Anderson (nee Edith Green), Mrs W. C. Hopkins (nee Jennie Raeburn), Mrs H. V. Green (nee Kate Green), and Miss Mary M'Lachlan. There were, in addition, six senior members of the Gwyn family Messrs Joseph, Arthur, Christopher, and George Gwyn. Mrs Walter Bayne (nee Rosina Gwyn) and Mrs J. Grainger (nee Alice Gwyn). Miss M'Lachlan and Mr George Gwyn were the two oldest ex-pupils at the function. Also present at the call-over were two members of the Otago Education Board, Mr J. Wallace (chairman) and Mr W. B. At a social function at the Broad Bay Coronation Hall on Saturday evening Mr Arthur Gwyn presented some interesting historical data gathered from early records _of the settlement of Otago. Mentioning that in October, 1842, Broad Bay had been selected as the best site in the harbour for a township, Mr Gwyn went on to describe how, following upon the formation of the Free Church in Scotland, the first settlers had come to Dunedin.
The following items were rendered during the evening:—Song, Mr P. M‘Gregor; piano-accordion solo, Mr T. Bushy; song, Mr G,eorge Kerr; song, Miss Margaret Pratt; tap dance, Miss Val M'Crerar. The accompanist was Mrs Pcrriman.
