NORTH CHINA. Oriental stratagem. During an action, pursuing Japanese soldiers found their progress held up by the destruction by the retiring Chinese of a bridge. The Japanese force bivouacked on the side of tho river while their engineers repaired the structure, when suddenly the grass and bush, previously prepared by tho Chinese, sprang into flame, tho fire spreading rapidly. The Japanese had to flee for their lives, many being seriously injured.
