GERMANY.—Dr Schacht at home with one of his grandchildren. Dr Schacht is regarded in Europe as Germany’s soundest financier, whose knowledge was made use of by Herr Hitler when he appointed him Minister of Economy. The Doctor is, however, passively anti-Nazi, and his persistent refusal to agree to measures desired by Hitler resulted in his being dismissed from office together with the experts whom he had appointed. It is now reported that Germany’s internal and financial affairs are in parlous state.
