CLAIM AGAINST 8.8. C.
OVERSIGHT IN ANNOUNCEMENT RECORD BY FAY COMPTOH Pres* Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, February 10. (Received February 11, at 11 a.m.) Golder’s Green Hippodrome Limited sought damages from the British Broadcasting Corporation for an alleged “ injurious falsehood. ’’ Counsel said while Miss Pay Compton was appearing in the Hippodrome the Broadcasting Corporation advertised her as participating in two performances of a radio play. This resulted in the Hippodrome receipts falling from £2,363 in the first week to £1,740 in the second week. _ Actually the Broadcasting Corporation was merely reproducing a gramophone record, but it was broadcast in a manner suggesting that Miss Compton was actually in the studio. The assistant director of programmes at the 8.8.0. gave evidence that he forgot to announce that Miss Compton was taking part “ either in person or by record.” When the mistake was pointed out the announcements were made clearly indicating that Miss Compton’s voice was recorded. A verdict was returned for the Broadcasting Corporation.
