WHARE FLAT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Ono of the finest picnic spots within easy reach of Dunedin is Whare Flat, but it reflects little credit on our City Council that the largest part of this valley, owned by the council, is closed to its citizens. For what is probably a small monetary return this lovely valley is leased to private interests and warnings to trespassers plastered all over the kowhai trees. None of the good swimming pools in the creek can now be used by the ratepayers. Surely the council when leasing could retain a 20yds strip either side of the stream for the use of its citizens. For a handful of silver they have sold one of the prettiest spots in Otago.—l am, etc., Fresh Air. February 11.
